Dear God… Let This Exam Be As Kind As I’ve Been To My Students

After more than a decade in the academia, I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed almost every part of the profession be it teaching, mentoring students, interactive classroom discussions, projects supervision, and those beautiful moments when a student finally understands a difficult concept. Well almost every part… except one. Marking examination scripts...   Many lecturers already knows this struggle. Those tall piles of answer sheets staring back at you like they have a personal grudge... Often containing handwritings that look like footballers autographs, so difficult to read.  At some point you begin to wonder whether you are marking an exam script or trying to decode ancient manuscripts newly discovered by archaeologists from the times of Tsumburbura and Barbushe.  Then comes the internal debate between “Did the student really understand this?” and “Maybe I should give some marks for effort, for grammar, for neatness, etc” aka "let my people go."  Wel...

READY OR NOT!

In the Quran Allah the Almighty has said "Kullu nafsin zaikatul maut – Every soul shall taste death". Despite, it is very important for one to note that the appointed time is not known to anyone. Gone are the days when people of old age were widely believed to be potential death passengers. Many of us are not living in danger in our daily life or work (or at least so we believe). Many a times, people leave their homes and never returned. Many at times went to bed and never woke up. Sometime last month, a very good friend of mine told me a sad touching story of his sick and helpless young cousin; today i returned home to find a shocking message on his Facebook page that she'd passed away (Allah ji qanta da Rahama, may Aljannah be her final abode. Ameen). I am not trying to scare anybody, not even trying to change the way one thinks of this world. All i am doing is just to remind us all, for no one knows when his time is up. I am urging you to take time NOW to reflect on your life, to take time NOW to ask yourself how ready am i to meet my creator?. Remember this, it is a compulsory journey many have taken yet NONE has ever returned. I am urging you to take time NOW because tomorrow may be too late. Don't be fooled into thinking that the world is going to stop after you are gone (it won't). So while you still have time, access to your mind and heart, do this. "Verily the death from which you flee will surely meet you, then you will be sent back to (Allah), the All Knower of the unseen and the seen, and he will tell you what you used to do". May the Almighty Allah guide us to the right path, accept our ibadat and repentance, and make our ending a happy one. Ameen
