Dear God… Let This Exam Be As Kind As I’ve Been To My Students

After more than a decade in the academia, I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed almost every part of the profession be it teaching, mentoring students, interactive classroom discussions, projects supervision, and those beautiful moments when a student finally understands a difficult concept. Well almost every part… except one. Marking examination scripts...   Many lecturers already knows this struggle. Those tall piles of answer sheets staring back at you like they have a personal grudge... Often containing handwritings that look like footballers autographs, so difficult to read.  At some point you begin to wonder whether you are marking an exam script or trying to decode ancient manuscripts newly discovered by archaeologists from the times of Tsumburbura and Barbushe.  Then comes the internal debate between “Did the student really understand this?” and “Maybe I should give some marks for effort, for grammar, for neatness, etc” aka "let my people go."  Wel...

Beyond the Classroom: Where Passion Meets Impact.

Last week, I had the privilege of facilitating a session on Communication Skills at the Students Training and Employability Program (STEP), organized by the Centre For Dryland Agriculture/RAIHUB, Bayero University Kano. The experience was nothing short of inspiring. Witnessing the students' enthusiasm and eagerness to learn, grow, and make a positive impact was a powerful reminder of the transformative power of education.

As I reflected on this experience, I couldn't help but think about the broader implications of education in Nigeria. Our university curriculum must be revamped to address the needs of employers and industries globally. This alignment would enable our institutions to produce highly employable candidates, equipped with the right skills for their chosen disciplines. Ultimately, this would drive innovation, enhance graduate employability, and foster societal development.

On a personal note, I've had the opportunity to teach an M.Sc. course (Management Skills for Environmental Managers) for over half a decade. Witnessing the transformative impact of this course on postgraduate students has been truly rewarding. I've seen firsthand how this course has shaped the minds of future environmental leaders. Recently, I learned that this course has been merged with another. I sincerely hope that the merger does not compromise the richness and depth of the course content which has been instrumental in shaping the minds of future environmental stewards.

To me, communication is a versatile tool with universal applicability, empowering individuals to convey ideas, build connections, and drive progress. In the work world, effective communication skills are crucial for success. Organizational culture thrives on good communication, which fosters collaboration, creativity, and productivity. As students transition into their careers, possessing excellent communication skills will enable them to articulate their ideas, negotiate, and influence stakeholders. By prioritizing communication skills, we can equip the next generation of leaders to excel in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.

As educators and professionals, we remain committed to championing programs that inspire change and growth. Doing what we love, and loving what we do, is a powerful catalyst for positive impact. Indeed, gratitude fills my heart for the opportunity to make a difference. As always, Alhamdulillah.

Once again, I'd like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the CDA/RAIHub for this wonderful initiative and to the organizers for giving me the opportunity to be part of this life-shaping and life-changing program.
