Dear God… Let This Exam Be As Kind As I’ve Been To My Students

After more than a decade in the academia, I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed almost every part of the profession be it teaching, mentoring students, interactive classroom discussions, projects supervision, and those beautiful moments when a student finally understands a difficult concept. Well almost every part… except one. Marking examination scripts...   Many lecturers already knows this struggle. Those tall piles of answer sheets staring back at you like they have a personal grudge... Often containing handwritings that look like footballers autographs, so difficult to read.  At some point you begin to wonder whether you are marking an exam script or trying to decode ancient manuscripts newly discovered by archaeologists from the times of Tsumburbura and Barbushe.  Then comes the internal debate between “Did the student really understand this?” and “Maybe I should give some marks for effort, for grammar, for neatness, etc” aka "let my people go."  Wel...

Parents

There is no amount of words, praise or action that can justify how much appreciation we owe to our parents. These are the very first set of people we met at the early stage of our life. They stood by us at a time when we could neither walk nor talk, at a time when we could neither sit nor eat properly. A period where all that we know best was crying and causing sleepless moments. Although no matter how hard we try, it's almost impossible for anyone to recall how much of sleepless nights we have caused them.

Despite, this does not mean that the process or system has changed. Just for appreciation, when you see a little baby cry have a careful look at the mother and notice her concern, undivided attention, love and care for the baby. This is the same kind of treatment most of us have received at one point in time or another.

It is of great importance to remember that no one has taken such a great step in investing in your life like your parents. I still remember the words of my mum narrating how I was enrolled into pre-nursery school. This was a decision made with hope and assurance that one day it will obtain me a degree and which it has. The combined efforts of raising a toddler is something barely imaginable by most single adults (unapologetic to all you Gwauros).

So no matter how busy or occupied you find yourself this days, it's of great importance to reinvest in their happiness. There is no amount of goodness one can do to pay them back. How can you pay someone who is wishing for your success to overtake theirs? How much do you owe someone who is willing to sacrifice their life to see you grow?. Remember, being too busy is never a justification for abandoning the responsibilities we owe to our parents.

May the Almighty Allah continue to guide, protect and have mercy on all our parents. May He take care of them as they did with us during our childhood days.

I wrote this piece (unedited version) some time ago, not knowing that i will live to become a father too. At this point, i have nothing more to write except ALHAMDULILLAH.
