Dear God… Let This Exam Be As Kind As I’ve Been To My Students

After more than a decade in the academia, I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed almost every part of the profession be it teaching, mentoring students, interactive classroom discussions, projects supervision, and those beautiful moments when a student finally understands a difficult concept. Well almost every part… except one. Marking examination scripts...   Many lecturers already knows this struggle. Those tall piles of answer sheets staring back at you like they have a personal grudge... Often containing handwritings that look like footballers autographs, so difficult to read.  At some point you begin to wonder whether you are marking an exam script or trying to decode ancient manuscripts newly discovered by archaeologists from the times of Tsumburbura and Barbushe.  Then comes the internal debate between “Did the student really understand this?” and “Maybe I should give some marks for effort, for grammar, for neatness, etc” aka "let my people go."  Wel...

CELEBRATING A MENTOR!

I have been fortunate to have been guided by a number of wonderful personalities. First and foremost were my parents, to whom I will forever be grateful to beyond explanations. Then there are a number of other individuals whom have guided and inspired me in more ways than I can ever imagine. Some have opened my eyes to unforseen opportunities, challenged me to reach greater heights and even helped me to believe in my abilities. Of all this individuals, there is one person who has modeled the kind of honesty, integrity, generosity and hardwork that made me want to follow his example, and i call him my MENTOR.

Good mentors are not only there to teach or give guidance, but to inspire in their entirety. There is a saying that "whatever you choose to do in life, be good at it". This is the very reason I've long chosen a good mentor who will help me learn and grow in my entrusted profession, and whom I will like to use this opportunity to publicly express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to. There is no amount of words I can write here to show my deep appreciation for the knowledge, wisdom and inspiration he has and is still imparting on me. I have no doubt that his help and support played a major role in my success today and he will forever remain an iconic symbol in my life. A building block of whatever i may become in the future. From him I've learned the values of honesty, sincerity, trust, hardworking and support. I truly appreciate all that he has done for me, and i am looking forward to doing the same for others.

Please ladies and gents, join me in celebrating my mentor, a rare breed of exceptional talent and truly one of a kind in the person of Professor Adamu Idris Tanko (AIT).

Happy Birthday to you once again Sir and Congratulations for being elected as the Deputy Vice Chancellor Admin, Bayero University Kano. May the Almighty Allah continue to protect and guide your ways always. May the future continue to be brighter. Ameen!

P.S "Mentors should be honored, treasured and appreciated while they are still alive, for appreciation is best expressed in life and not in eulogy. If you have a mentor, do not hesitate to celebrate him today".
