Dear God… Let This Exam Be As Kind As I’ve Been To My Students

After more than a decade in the academia, I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed almost every part of the profession be it teaching, mentoring students, interactive classroom discussions, projects supervision, and those beautiful moments when a student finally understands a difficult concept. Well almost every part… except one. Marking examination scripts...   Many lecturers already knows this struggle. Those tall piles of answer sheets staring back at you like they have a personal grudge... Often containing handwritings that look like footballers autographs, so difficult to read.  At some point you begin to wonder whether you are marking an exam script or trying to decode ancient manuscripts newly discovered by archaeologists from the times of Tsumburbura and Barbushe.  Then comes the internal debate between “Did the student really understand this?” and “Maybe I should give some marks for effort, for grammar, for neatness, etc” aka "let my people go."  Wel...

MY COUNTRY

I have formed the habit of following the Nigerian media for the smallest bit of information. It has gradually become part of my daily three square meal recipe. This few days, I have read a lot of horrific and terrible things that have drained me of my mental happiness. Does this mean knowing too much is a curse? Does it mean someone has to avoid what the media brings? Does it mean i may be the only person dealing with such kind of feeling? The answer is surely a capital NO. There are a lot of people involved, and the headlines will keep on coming no matter how well we try to avoid them. I have already seen a lot of posts from my friends lately, expressing their grievances and condolences for the young souls of our brothers and sisters we lost in this great nation. Corruption, Corruption, Corruption....I still believe is the backbone of all the evils we are facing in our beloved country. Our elders say "charity begins at home", well that sounds real to my own ears. Everyday we keep complaining and nagging over the same thing, again and again "our leaders". So instead of putting the blame on this leaders, why not try facing it alone for a change? Work it all out in your own head. Have the conversation with yourself, and try to imagine all the possible outcomes and the solutions. Change your own self, change as much individuals as possible around you for the better. Be it your wife, aunt, uncle, parents, son, daughter, siblings, friends, cousins,....anybody  that you can as a family. Surely and most definitely, ALL our leaders were once from another family. Imagine if the good character  you have built in yourself or another individual happens to be part of our future leadership and governance in this country. It may not be obvious just yet, but it will be. You have free will, of course, but this chance could change everything for the better if you choose to grab it. There is nothing wrong with choosing not to. But there would be something wrong with denying yourself the chance of becoming a better change agent. I wish us all, a happy journey to a brighter future.
